Infrastructure-Light Roadside Solution

A flexible lane solution that offers a choice of a lightweight traditional architecture or a revolutionary geometry-based overhead solution.

Infrastructure-Light Lane Solution

No two roads are the same. That is why at ETC, we don’t use a one-size-fits-all solution. Our flexible subsystems are the building blocks of uniquely curated solutions designed to meet each customer’s specific business objectives.

We provide a flexible infrastructure-light lane solution that offers businesses a choice between a lightweight version of a traditional axle-based classification and a revolutionary geometry-based overhead-only classification. In our new overhead-only solution, high-frequency LiDAR captures vehicle dimensions and shapes to classify vehicles with more precision and differentiation than possible with traditional axle counts.

All the supporting subsystems of our efficient infrastructure-light toll lane architecture are designed to accommodate a customer’s choice between:

  • Lightweight hybrid LiDAR and axle-based classification; and
  • New shape-based overhead classification.

light gantry installWe have a track record of highly dependable lane installations for a variety of road types, service types, and environmental regions. New roadways, infrastructure upgrades, and the emerging multi-service mobility initiatives present an opportunity for our lightweight and flexible roadside solution that comes with reduced infrastructure requirements. In the past, we have successfully installed and maintained an infrastructure-light tolling solution, where the overhead equipment was installed on standard DOT traffic signal poles. This type of solution eliminates the need for custom gantry designs and reduces construction costs.

In general, we have no constraints on the grade, slope, or curvature of the roadway at the toll zone and can adjust the roadside equipment to compensate for any variation in roadway levels. The equipment used for our roadside solutions are selected to have a high tolerance for the vibrations typically experienced by different gantry designs, so we can maximize the use of COTS brackets and equipment mounts and minimize the infrastructure footprint.

Lane Controller

In our field-proven roadside system the rite® Redundant Lane Controller (riteRLC™) and rite® Roadside Redundant Communications (riteRRC™) modules work in tandem to solve your roadside needs with data and revenue protection.

Our redundant lane/zone controller provides deterministic real-time transaction data capture and correlation to vehicle positional information in multi-lane zones.

The module can be configured as needed for different toll zones or lane types and is easily expandable to add more components. This advanced system eliminates obsolescence and end-of-life concerns present in other solutions. It supports a failover system that is software controlled with diagnostics to enable remote troubleshooting during adverse weather conditions. Key features of riteRLC™ include:

  • Reduce system complexity
  • Reduce repair time
  • Reduce hardware
  • Reduce troubleshooting time
  • Reduce infrastructure
  • Reduce lost revenue

Roadway Communications

The high-speed rite® Roadside Redundant Communications and Control System has proven itself in the field and with extensive testing in the lab.

Based on the latest industrial automation technology, the rite® Redundant Roadway Communications System provides fully redundant, real-time communications between lane controllers and lane equipment.

The module performed exceptionally well and exceeded all expectations during temperature, vibration, and shock testing. It has now been in production since 2017 in Chicago on the highway network of Illinois Tollway.

The RRC Module can be configured as needed for different toll zones and is easily expandable to add more components. This new system eliminates obsolescence and end-of-life concerns present in other solutions. It supports a failover system that is software controlled with diagnostics to enable remote troubleshooting during adverse weather conditions.
